An additional $1,100,000 is required for civil The greater part of this is due to the effect of the Salaries Commission which was under-estimated, but a portion is required for Police pensions now charged to this sub-head as a result of recent legislation.
The provision for Police pensions shows a reduction of $30,000. This amount will become progressively lower as all new pensions will now be met from the preceding sub-head.
Minor changes occur under other sub-heads with the exception of an additional $150,000 for Volunteer pensions which were previously under-estimated.
The total increase under this Head is $1,500,000.

The events which have taken place in the Far
East during the last twelve months have rendered necessary a further increase in the estimates for the Police Force. In order to meet ever increasing commitments the Commissioner of Police has been forced to ask for a considerable increase in his establishment. Consequently in the rank and file 356 new posts of Constable are provided, with proportionate increases in the non-commissioned ranks amounting to 34 Corporals, 14 Sergeants, and two Staff Sergeants. In the higher ranks 50 new posts of Sub-Inspector and Inspector are provided for, but of these two are rograded as Chief Inspectors and one is transferred permanently to the Treasury as a Treasury Tax Inspector. This latter post has actually been in existence for the last 11 years and it has been thought appropriate to put this arrangement on a permanent basis.
One additional post of Assistant Superintendent is also provided for as well as one new post of Assistant Commissioner of Police. Finally one additional post of Deputy Commissioner of Police is provided for, making three in all. Of these three officers, however, only one is effective because one is about to retire and another officer has been seconded for special dutics.
of the now grade of Interpreter Translator three posts are provided for under this department. Certain promotions and transfers have occurred in the General Clerical Service, Women Confidential Assistants, and Wireless Telegraphists.
